WELCOME TO NORTHERN VIRGINIA
Northern Virginia, colloquially termed NOVA, is the most populous region of Virginia and the Washington metropolitan area.
The charming city of Alexandria is replete with restaurants, boutiques, and historic museums. Make taking a pleasant stroll while gazing upon well-preserved 18th- and 19th-century architecture part of your weekly routine. Delight friends and family from out of town by taking them to Port City Brewing Company for a taste of local beer or impress them by visiting Captain Gregory’s, a speakeasy disguised behind the delectable Sugar Shack Donuts. Indulge in the acclaimed Hank’s Pasta Bar for rustic seasonally-driven Italian dishes or visit the oldest farmers market in the US at the Old Town Farmers’ Market. If athletic pursuits are more your style, don’t miss taking advantage of the Mount Vernon Trail with 20 miles of trails and 900+ acres of protected open space.
Getting active with the whole family has never been easier than in Fairfax. If a day out with the kids is long overdue, take them to Lake Fairfax Park where everyone in the family can enjoy outdoor swimming, a lazy river, seasonal fishing, picnic areas, trails, campgrounds, and more. For a fun indoor activity take the family to the Children’s Science Center lab where kids explore STEM concepts at the interactive museum that is sure to make for an enjoyable afternoon.
If retail therapy is on the agenda, look no further than Pentagon City Mall in Arlington to shop favorites like Guess, J. Crew, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Sephora, and Zara. If high-end shopping is more up your alley, you can’t miss Tyson’s Galleria with stores like Cartier, Chanel, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and more.
Though there is plenty of shopping to do in NOVA, don’t miss the Torpedo Factory Art Center, which is home to the nation’s largest collection of working-artists’ open studios under one roof. Founded in an old munitions plant over four decades ago, this Alexandria landmark is a highlight of the Potomac Riverfront.
Though just outside of the District city limits, fixtures of the federal government are located in NOVA. The Pentagon, which is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, is in Arlington County just west of the Potomac River. Arlington National Cemetery is also nearby where both tourists and locals alike have come to pay their respects for over 150 years. Mount Vernon, once the plantation of George Washington, is situated on the banks of the Potomac River and is now one of the nation’s most visited historic sites. Combining an authentically interpreted 18th-century home, lush gardens and grounds, and intriguing museum galleries, Mount Vernon is a must-see for visitors and locals alike.
Northern Virginia is a favorite destination with upscale shopping malls, outlets, winery shops and businesses galore.
