Choosing the Right Realtor
Your home is probably the largest investment you’ll ever make, so it’s important to pick the right Realtor to work for you. Whether you are buying or selling your home, here are some do’s and don’ts to think about before hiring an agent.
Ask trusted friends for agent recommendations. Try to get recommendations from people who have bought or sold a home in your same neighborhood and price range. An agent who works with $2 million properties may not have the same expertise with $200,000 homes.
Do your research. Most real estate websites, such as Zillow, have agent reviews online. This can be a good place to start. You can also use the search tool on the National Association of Realtors website. To find out if a client has ever filed a complaint against an agent, check with your state real estate licensing board.
Interview several agents. Ask for details about their marketing strategies and specifically, how they plan to market your home. If you are buying, you’ll want to hire someone who knows your target neighborhoods well. Make sure you get along with the agent. You could be spending a lot of time together looking for homes or tackling problems together if they arise. You’ll need to like each other and be able to communicate well.
Check out the agent’s website. Most realty teams have their own websites that list their current homes for sale, offers background information on the agents and much more.
Pick friends or family just because you know them. You don’t want to jeopardize a friendship if the buying/selling process gets difficult. Also keep in mind that your realtor will come to know the details of your finances, so you need to be comfortable with that.
Don’t be afraid to “break up” with your agent. Be honest and let them know when it’s not working out. List your reasons and be respectful.
